Early Childhood

MUSICAL THEATER classes -An introduction to the Musical Theater genre for young children, these classes provide the opportunity to explore acting exercises, simple movement for musical theater and an introduction to singing. Students learn songs and movement from current and classic musicals in preparation for an end of semester in class presentation.

Elementary Children

MUSICAL THEATER: SING ACT DANCE; BROADWAY PREP; BLACK BOX PRODUCTION CLASS

SING ACT DANCE classes are the introductory classes to an overview of the musical theatre genre. Acting games, songs, appropriate for grade level, and dance are part of the curriculum. BROADWAY PREP continues honing the previously learned skills. Our BLACK BOX PRODUCTION CLASS show is Winnie the Pooh. (Please read website for more information. And space is very limited.)


DANCE: TAP/JAZZ & TAP/BALLET COMBO; TAP for the beginner

The COMBO classes are perfect for young dancers who want to explore tap or ballet for the first time, these classes introduce basic vocabulary and movement and rhythmic skills while building a foundation for future progression in the study of jazz, tap, and ballet.

TAP for the beginner focuses on rhythms and footwork, creating a percussion instrument out of the dancer’s feet. Classes emphasize the development and strengthening of basic tap technique and terminology highlighting the importance of rhythm and sound. Musical Theater Center teaches Broadway or show tap, which incorporates upper body and use of arms.


VOICE: INTRO TO VOICE & SEMI-PRIVATE/PRIVATE VOICE

INTRO TO VOICE! This is an introductory course are designed to introduce students to the basic techniques of vocal production, pitch controls, tone production, and breathing through various exercises and demonstrations. Students must be at least in 3rd grade and be not younger than 8 years old by the start of classes.

SEMI-PRIVATE VOICE & PRIVATE VOICE– Each session will include intensive work on vocal technique; repertoire suitable for the individual student. Each voice session is one half hour. Prerequisite is one of our introductory classes or permission of the instructor.

Middle and High School

Hold a spot on your calendar for our MONDAY MASTER CLASS series for students grades 9 - 12! Join Helen Hayes Award winning directors, musical directors, and choreographers from the metro Washington area on Monday evenings in February and March. (Eighth graders may be permitted upon approval of Director of Education.) There will be limited space for this class. Dates and guests to be announced.


ACTING: ACTING TECHNIQUES I & II, SCENE STUDY


ACTING TECHNIQUE - Acting is an important component of musical theater training. In Acting Technique I, students learn a variety of approaches, methods and acting techniques. Both classes provide students with concentrated work in basic acting techniques, improvisation, character development, scene work, monologue study, stage direction, script analysis, critiquing and mime techniques.

SCENE STUDY - Its foundation is in the performance of a “scene” or a segment of a play by the students. Scene Study is instrumental for actors to get experience being directed. This class includes acting exercises that help students develop their technique. These exercises may help with skills such as emotional connection, character development, studies of comedic and dramatic genre, and voice and diction.


VOICE: MTC GLEE; INTRO TO VOICE & SEMI-PRIVATE/PRIVATE VOICE

MTC GLEE - Do you like to sing along with songs on Glee and Glee Project? Be a part of a fun vocal class which will sing Motown, current Pop, and musical theater tunes. A choreographer will come in to set these songs in motion. The class culminates with a presentation of materials learned for parents and friends.

DANCE: INTRO TO MODERN/CONTEMPORARY; HIP HOP


MODERN appeals to the creatvie, artistic soul in everyone because of its expressiveness and freedom of individuality. CONTEMPORARY is a fusion of jazz, ballet, hip-hop, lyrical and many modern dance styles, encouraging pedestrian-like movement.

HIP HOP is a high-energy class that uses the latest sounds in rap, R&B and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreographers.

“LA DANCE WORKSHOP”

Are you ready for a Hollywood dance experience? Jennifer Johnson, currently a professional dancer and actress in Los Angeles, is coming to MTC to teach a master class! She has danced in music videos, movies, commercials, tv shows, award shows, and world tours with many artists. The class is designed for students who wish to quickly improve their skills in the most popular LA dance styles, such as hip-hop, grooving, jazz-funk, dancing in heels, & freestyle. Students will also learn the basics of dancing on camera versus dancing at a live show, or with an artist. Come get a taste of that LA flavor, and learn tips to start and make it big in the dance and entertainment industry!

ADULT

“CELEBRITY FIT” consists of half tone and half cardio. Get a 90 min total body workout with Jennifer Johnson’s specially sequenced exercises and hip dance moves. With the use of light hand weights, resistance bands, barre and mat work, and finishing with dance cardio, you'll be sculpting your body, shedding those pounds, and then dancing like no one’s watching! The workout is so much fun and challenging for all fitness levels, shifting your shape into something that you never knew you could achieve!

You need to bring a 3lb hand weight, and a yoga mat.
